Our Gratefuls by Sebastian Biasucci

Inspired by the confessions…

Artist Statement

My name is Sebastian Biasucci and I’m a Toronto-based actor and theatre maker. As the pandemic rages on, more and more projects I was looking forward to working on have been cancelled, so it was great to be able to... spend the week creating this piece. I'm grateful to Convergence for creating the opportunity and grateful to the patrons who funded the work.

This short play was inspired by multiple COVID confessions that Convergence Theatre received. Voicemails about a mom’s struggle to get her daughter home, something I experienced with my grandfather a few week ago. A man trying out meal kits, a couple cutting their honeymoon short and a new relationship thrown into uncertainty. Finally a family saying their gratefuls (you’ll see).

A few months ago these individuals and their loved ones we're starting exciting new chapters in their lives and now are all connected by a fear and uncertainty of what's to come. Accompanied by the fleeting comfort that for now, they're ok. Two feelings I'm sure we've all been going back and forth between.

I wish I could bring a group of actors to read or better yet perform this play to the patrons, but until then I'm grateful it can be read. This play is made up of five short story lines that would occur in different areas of the stage with the lights guiding the focus one after another and at times simultaneously. Now sit back, relax and enjoy your read. I'm grateful for you. Be well!
