The Corona Variations
CONCEIVED, WRITTEN, & DIRECTED BY
Julie Tepperman
Artist Statement
Our motivation was simple: Artists need work, and audiences need art. Both The Corona Variations and The COVID Commissions were born out of my impulse to create and connect in the face of this crisis.
We at Convergence had been flirting with the idea of intimate encounters over the phone for some time now, but the technology... and co-ordination required always scared us.
This situation has forced us to embrace a more DIY approach; we hope there’s something mysterious, charming, comforting, and even sexy about receiving a phone call from a stranger and briefly escaping into their world, all the while knowing that the actors on the other end of the line are all self-isolating in their homes, just like you.
Oddly, I’ve never felt more connected (and re-connected) to people – known friends, or artists & audience who are new to me – than I have during this time of isolation. I continue to be wonderfully overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity of spirit and giving – be it money, time, energy, and art – that’s been flowing our way.
Thank you to this brave creative team and to all of you for daring to pick up the phone.
— Julie
Playwright & Director
Julie Tepperman is an actor, playwright, educator, and Co-Artistic Leader of Convergence Theatre. She comes from a long-line of germaphobes, and has worked really hard her whole life to curb that habit...but so much for all that now. What a relief to never have to shake hands with anyone ever again! Read more about Julie!

Aviva Armour-Ostroff is an actor/producer/director living in quarantine with her (life and working) partner, step-daughter, seven year old son, and cat. Aviva currently spends her days watching her asparagus grow, playing monopoly, ordering cheese, making cookies, doing yoga, and editing her feature film, Lune.
Bahareh Yaraghi is an actor. She’s an ensemble member of ARC in Toronto and has been spending lots of time during these self-isolation days taking care of the future of ARC, reading plays, cooking, baking, exercising and catching up with dear ones around the globe. Also, lots and lots of daydreaming about adopting all the puppies and kitties! We’ll see!
Niki Landau is an actor, playwright and Co-Artistic Director of Theatre PANIK. She is currently based in a house in west Toronto, upstairs, first room on the left. Niki spends her isolation eating anything her child bakes for her, ordering hand soap online, and trying to figure out grade seven math, which is the reason she went into theatre in the first place. Niki is glad you can't see the nearly empty family-size bag of Ruffles Sour Cream 'N Onion potato chips resting against her computer as she writes this.
Faly Mevamanana is a Dora-nominated actor/singer from Coquitlam BC, who generally resides in Toronto (except during a pandemic). Some of her favourite credits include Peter Pan at Neptune Theatre, and Juno's Reward at The Grand Theatre. Faly is currently hiding away at her sister and brother-in-law's house in Nova Scotia. She is dealing with the current situation by creating music videos, fermenting EVERYTHING, and eating copious amounts of sourdough bread.

Kimwun Perehinec is an actor, producer, educator, and was a co-founder of Studio 180 Theatre. Most recently she got to play with the superb ensemble of Howland Company’s Casimir and Caroline and she hopes that someday soon she’ll get to play with the superb ensemble of VideoCabaret… for now she’s thinking about funny voices and doing communications coaching over the phone, sometimes at the same time. Her home office chair is not at all comfortable. Her onesies are.

Jeff Lillico is a Dora Award-winning actor, having played many of the largest stages throughout Canada, as well stints in Chicago & New York City. Jeff appeared on 11 episodes of Designated Survivor and in a moment of supreme idiocy asked Kiefer if he’d “ever been on a big tv show before?” Perhaps Jeff will use this extra time to learn about the legacy of Jack Bauer.

Colin Simmons is an actor, writer, producer, and director—turned web designer and developer—based in Toronto. Colin’s worked on [and off] stages both big (the Stratford Festival) and small (the Toronto Fringe Festival). Lately, he’s turned his focus to voiceover and is a principal or guest on a number of animated series, including Hero Elementary, Kingdom Builders, and Hailey and the Hero Hearts. Nowadays he’s particularly thankful that his second passion—web design and development—is in high demand. Though it does mean a lot of screen time… and pots of tea. www.colinsimmons.ca
Morro and Jasp are a Dora and Canadian Comedy-Award winning clown sister duo who have created 12 full-length plays about their lives together. They recently traveled to Finland and Cape Breton to perform Morro and Jasp: Save the Date (their most recent play about planning a wedding) which now seems like it was a dream that happened in the land before time. They are staying sane by serenading each other over Zoom and every now that then stepping outside to howl at the moon. They really miss hugs and rooms full of people laughing together.
Tommie-Amber Pirie is a Canadian Screen Award Nominated actress and an emerging director. Named as Hollywood Reporter’s TIFF Top Ten To Watch, Tommie graces screens large and small and streamed from the comfort of your isolated couch. Most recently, she can be seen in James Versus His Future Self, now available on iTunes. Tommie-Amber is seasoned in self-isolation and finally feels affirmed in her stay-at-home tendencies. When not studying her craft, you will find her DIY-ing the shit out of her house and disappearing down a Pinterest rabbit hole.

performed by: Melody A. Johnson (Jean) or Stewart Arnott (Gene)
Melody A. Johnson is an actor, writer and educator who has spent lots of time performing on Toronto stages and touring Canada & the UK with her self-penned Miss Caledonia, and most recently her bad neighbour comedy/drama, Person of Interest. Since you’re inside these days baking bread and washing your hands, you might also hear Melody's voice on weekends as Nola the turtle in Binky: Pets of the Universe on Treehouse TV. More Melody hijinx can be found at: www.melodyjohnson.ca
Stewart Arnott has been happily at this for 4 decades, this being acting, directing, voicing, teaching and coaching. His recent directing gig was Marjorie Prime at Coal Mine Theatre, and his COVID-19-interrupted acting gig was Room at The Grand/Off-Mirvish. One thing about this plague: he is in excellent and multitudinous company.
